An outdoor week: Una and Sutjeska

This seven-day route gives the Una waterfalls and Sutjeska’s forest and mountains three nights each. Spend the first three nights around Bihać and the next three at Tjentište. Day four is the long move between parks, leaving the outdoor days for the places you came to explore.

Route at a glance

  1. Bihać
  2. Una National Park
  3. Tjentište
  4. Sutjeska National Park

Day 1: arrive in Bihać

Settle into your Bihać-area room and keep the first outing close to the city. Gradska otoka and the riverside park bring the Una into a relaxed arrival day, with the centre nearby for a meal. Save the national-park road journey for the morning.

Night 1: Bihać area. Use the Bihać stay guide to pick an address that suits the following park days.

Day 2: Štrbački buk

Give the day to Štrbački buk, with time on the visitor paths and viewing areas. Entrance 3, Ćelije, is approached from Orašac on an 8 km road with asphalt and gravel sections. The park says that this approach accommodates cars and minibuses of up to 35 passengers; it is unsuitable for large coaches.

If rafting is a priority, use it in place of part of a park day. Agree the section, operator, equipment and return before travelling. The park requires a licensed skipper for commercial watersports; suitability depends on the particular activity and party.

Night 2: Bihać area.

Day 3: Martin Brod

Martin Brod gives the second park day a different setting at the Unac–Una confluence. Milančev buk, the Lučica area and the settlement make this a visit of its own. Leave the day open enough to stay with the waterfalls and village.

Kulen Vakuf adds settlement and fortress history if that is a priority. An ascent towards Ostrovica takes its own time and effort. Night 3 remains in the Bihać area; alternatively, move that one night to Kulen Vakuf and arrange day four’s departure from the new address.

Day 4: travel to Tjentište

Keep this as the transfer day between the two parks. The departure address, breaks and arrival at the room take priority over adding another excursion. Arrange a meal stop along the agreed route, then leave the evening for settling in.

Night 4: Tjentište, the first of three nights here. Give both overnight addresses in a transport enquiry, including whether night three was moved to Kulen Vakuf.

Day 5: Perućica, with approval and a guide

For the forest day, arrange the park’s approved guided Perućica outing. Its published route is moderately demanding, with 8–9 km of walking, around 4–5 hours overall and 3–4 hours on foot. Entry requires the park’s approval and accompaniment by its licensed guide.

When that outing is not arranged or conditions call for a different day, give the time to Tjentište’s memorial and an agreed viewpoint visit. The memorial house’s frescoes need their own access arrangement. A view towards Perućica is a different visit from walking inside the protected forest.

Night 5: Tjentište.

Day 6: a Zelengora day to suit the walkers

The park’s four-lake itinerary links Kotlaničko, Štirinsko, Borilovačko and Orlovačko. It is difficult: about 9–10 hours overall, including 5–6 hours walking, with off-road transport and a guide. Reserve the whole day for it if it suits the party; the finish and pickup belong in the arrangement.

For a shorter version, ask about a Donje Bare outing with the Borić viewpoint. The published 400 m segment near the lake is only part of that visit. The mountain-road approach and full return still need to fit the day.

Night 6: Tjentište.

Day 7: continue the journey

Set the onward destination before committing the final day to another walk. An early flight or a further overnight base may need most of the day for travel. With fewer than seven days, one park usually gives a more rewarding visit than compressing this two-base route.

Use the Una guide and Sutjeska guide to settle the individual outings. In Una, stay on the designated visitor paths; swimming is restricted to marked zones and is prohibited within 50 m upstream or downstream of waterfalls.

For a complete-trip enquiry, include the dates, overnight bases and walking experience. Say whether you prefer the approved forest walk or the memorial and viewpoint version on day five, then the shorter lake outing or four-lake route on day six. Arrange the rooms, transport and guides around those choices.
