Rafting in Bosnia and Herzegovina

Pair Konjic’s old stone bridge with a day on the Neretva, or Bihać’s riverside streets with a trip on the Una. Around Foča, a Tara or Drina outing can be the reason for the stay. Keep a full day for rafting: the river section, conditions and skipper’s assessment decide which outing suits your party.

At a glance

Start with Konjic for a Neretva outing, the Foča area for Tara and Drina ideas, or Bihać for the Una.

The river name alone does not describe the rapids, meeting point or time on the water.

Meeting, equipment fitting, briefing, transport and changing make the activity day longer than the river time.

Tell the provider the party’s ages, experience and relevant health or mobility needs before accepting an offer.

Neretva near Konjic

Konjic fits a holiday linking Sarajevo and Mostar when you want to spend time on the Neretva as well as cross it. Give rafting its own day, and confirm the meeting point, river section and return time with your provider before planning onward travel.

Tara and Drina around Foča

If this river setting is your priority, ask for the exact river section, launch and finish. Obtain the proposed route, including whether it crosses a border, and any document requirements before booking.

Una near Bihać

The park describes a rafting route from Štrbački buk through Loskun to Lohovo. Its forceful first part needs the provider’s assessment for the actual group and conditions.

Rafting on the Una

Una National Park publishes this section as 15 km, with a rafting ride of 3–4 hours. It describes a forceful first part with rapids, falls and eddies, and difficulty that changes with the water level. The name helps you compare the actual outing instead of treating every Una departure as equivalent.

The published 3–4 hours is river time, not the time between leaving and returning to your room. Meeting, equipment fitting, briefing, transport and changing need their own space around it.

The park’s 2026 rules require organisers to provide a qualified skipper, the prescribed vessel registration, participant insurance and equipment including a life jacket, helmet and paddle. They also require a parent or guardian’s presence or written approval for minors. Ask the chosen provider to explain its arrangement for your party.

The park’s tariff says its water-activity ticket covers the permission fee for the named section, with equipment excluded. The 2026 decision also allows that water ticket to be used for the charged visitor areas on the day of the activity. This describes what the park ticket covers. Ask the provider what is included in the rafting package.

Follow the skipper’s briefing and wear the required equipment. The park prohibits alcohol during rafting. Strong currents can occur around rivers and waterfalls; your travel and medical cover should include the activity.

Simple plans

Konjic:
arrive for an afternoon around the old stone bridge and town, then stay for a full Neretva outing the next day. The bridge gives you a first look at the river before spending a day on it. Keep onward travel and any evening plans flexible until the provider confirms the meeting time and return.
Foča area:
choose and confirm the actual river section before choosing your stay. Keep the rafting day for the water; with another day, Tjentište’s Sutjeska memorial offers time with the region’s history. Arrange the journey and any memorial interior visit separately. A mountain walk in Sutjeska needs another chosen route and its own day.
Bihać:
begin with the centre walk past Fethija and time beside the Una on Gradska otoka, then give the next day to the agreed rafting trip. If you have another day, choose Štrbački buk or Martin Brod for time on the visitor paths and views of the falls. Keep that land visit separate so an uncertain river finish does not force a rushed drive.

When to visit

Ask whether the trip suits everyone in your group and the conditions expected on your dates. Ask the provider about the water level, temperature and river section for your dates.

Choose your next step

Prepare a rafting request with Visit BiH, then compare the actual river section and inclusions with the business making the offer. Discuss the skipper, fitted equipment, insurance, meeting and finish, transfers and cancellation terms. The operator must assess participation for your date.

Respect and environment

  • Follow the provider’s briefing and the rules for the actual river section.
  • Keep litter with you and use the facilities provided for changing and breaks.
  • Leave riverbanks and neighbouring villages as you found them.
