Drive
Useful for several stops in one day or accommodation away from bus and train routes.
A car can be useful between overnight bases and awkward once you reach the old town. Plan city days and travelling days separately: public transport suits some journeys, while a private vehicle earns its place when the route, luggage or stops make it useful.

For local journeys without a parked car. Use the city’s own routes, ticket rules and last return.
Compare the whole journey between your stays, including transport to and from each station.
A rail journey may suit your route when the current service and station fit. Railway notices matter as well as the timetable.
For a local ride, late arrival or a journey with luggage and stops. Settle the fare and destination before travelling.
Driving documents and the hire agreement are separate requirements. Read the driving and car-hire guides for your licence and route.
City tickets and boarding rules belong to the local system; an intercity ticket covers a different journey.
For a day trip, the last return departure or agreed pickup sets the time available.
In Sarajevo, tram line 3 connects Ilidža and Baščaršija. It is a useful starting point for a stay along that corridor, but the stop for your return journey may differ from the outward one. The Sarajevo tram guide explains the local detail.
Blagaj can be a bus outing from Mostar: Mostarbus lists line 10 between Sjeverni logor and Blagaj. Use the operator’s timetable for the day you intend to travel, including the return. Our Mostar bus guide covers the city system. Other cities have their own routes and ticket arrangements; Sarajevo’s rules do not apply across the country.
For Sarajevo–Mostar, compare a coach journey with the ŽFBiH rail timetable for your travel date. The railway publishes services on the Sarajevo–Čapljina corridor, but temporary notices can change the plan. Our Sarajevo–Mostar guide compares coach and private-road journeys. For either public option, the service and arrival station for your date belong in the plan before you fix the accommodation.
Sarajevo’s main coach station is at Put života 8. The ticket covers the bus journey. You still need to get to the station and from the arrival stop to your hotel. Private transport becomes more attractive when several people share the cost, luggage is cumbersome or you want a visit on the way. A stop in Konjic needs time and waiting agreed as part of the journey.
Self-drive gives you control over a route with several bases. The hire agreement still determines who can drive, the deposit, collection and return, and any cross-border or one-way arrangement. Start with car hire and the driving guide before committing to a vehicle.
For Sarajevo or Mostar, read the parking guide alongside the accommodation address. A hotel’s parking offer and a space you have reserved are different things. The BIHAMK road report is useful near departure, particularly for work, restrictions and changing conditions.
Keep the final address and route offline for the day you travel.
When booking for a group, mention any boarding assistance and how much luggage you’ll have.
Use the current road report near departure, especially for mountain journeys and seasonal restrictions.
Keep room between an intercity arrival and a separately booked flight for disruption and the airport journey.
