A three-day stećci trail from Mostar

A raised hand at Radimlja, a craftsman’s name at Boljuni, carved moons on the Blidinje plateau: these three burial grounds reward different kinds of looking. This three-day route starts and finishes in Mostar, with one night there and another near Blidinje.

Logistics at a glance

Three visiting days, starting and finishing in Mostar.

Two route nights: Mostar after day one and the Blidinje side after day two. An earlier arrival night is additional.

Radimlja and Boljuni near Stolac, then Dugo polje on the plateau. The Masna Luka walk is an alternative final-morning outing.

Day 1 – Radimlja and Boljuni, with time in Stolac

Begin at Radimlja, in Vidovo polje west of Stolac. Slabs, chest-shaped stones and gabled tombstones stand together here. Among the carvings are figures with raised arms, hunting and dancing scenes. Walk around the stones slowly: their sides carry as much interest as the view of the whole burial ground.

Boljuni lies south-west of Stolac, with stones in two groups. Its inscriptions include the names of the craftsman Grubač and the scribe Semorad; deer hunts and wheel-dances give you something else to compare. Seeing both sites brings the makers, scenes and shapes into the same day.

The rural approach to Boljuni needs its own visiting arrangements. JU Radimlja is the starting contact for enquiries about the named sites and interpretation. Leave the afternoon for Stolac and the Bregava, then return to Mostar for the first night. If the site visits take longer, Radimlja and town time make a worthwhile day on their own.

Day 2 – Dugo polje and a night on the plateau

At Dugo polje, below Vran on Blidinje, the open mountain setting changes the experience. The heritage account records 150 stones and carvings of rosettes, crescent moons and dances, but no inscriptions. After Boljuni’s named makers, that absence is another way to think about what survives of a life.

Radimlja, Boljuni and Dugo polje are all named components of UNESCO’s Stećci Medieval Tombstone Graveyards property. The inscription belongs to those specific burial grounds. It does not make every stone, village or plateau on the journey a World Heritage site.

Give the move from Mostar and the necropolis their own day, then stay on the Blidinje side. The overnight address matters here: food, heating and the final road approach should be part of the accommodation arrangement. A Čvrsnica summit would turn this into a different trip.

Day 3 – A plateau morning, then Mostar

A second look at Dugo polje leaves a quieter final morning. For a walking focus instead, Masna Luka has a defined loop starting by the Church of St Elijah. Visit Blidinje publishes 6.5 km, about 2½ hours and roughly 200 m of height difference. That is a walking outing before the return to Mostar, rather than a brief extra stop.

The two route nights are Mostar after day one and Blidinje after day two. An arrival night before the first visit is additional. With only two days available, spend them around Mostar and Stolac, or give them to Blidinje, rather than squeezing both journeys and three sites into a shorter stay.

Extensions that change the journey

Trebinje adds a southern town day and night, with the Museum of Herzegovina, the walled old town and the Trebišnjica as further subjects. Konjic’s stone bridge belongs to a northbound departure towards Sarajevo; that changes the finish of the Mostar circuit.

For help joining these visits, a trip enquiry can centre on the three burial grounds, the two overnight bases and the return to Mostar. Say whether interpretation or the Masna Luka walk matters more. Those choices give the journey a purpose before rooms and transport are arranged.

For a self-drive version, the car-hire guide covers the driver and rental conditions. Include the plateau approach and return location in your car-hire request, then check both against the rental provider’s offer.

Visiting burial grounds with care

Leave stones and fragments undisturbed, and avoid climbing, sitting on or rubbing the carvings. Landmines and unexploded ordnance remain a risk in parts of the countryside and mountains. Use an experienced local guide for off-road walks, keep to marked trails and avoid shortcuts.
