Driving licences, permits and vehicle documents
Your licence, the car’s insurance and the owner’s permission need separate answers. For UK and US licences, the guidance below gives specific permit requirements. For a hire car, settle the documents and permitted countries before collection.

UK licences: where you obtain the car matters
For a UK licence, UK government advice distinguishes where you obtain the vehicle. You can drive your own car or one hired outside Bosnia and Herzegovina with a valid UK licence. Renting or borrowing within the country also requires a 1968 International Driving Permit, obtained in the UK before travel.
The same advice requires a local licence for a stay longer than six months. If you are moving or staying longer, resolve that process separately from the documents for a holiday rental.
US licences: take both documents
The US State Department requires a valid US licence and International Driving Permit to drive or hire a car in Bosnia and Herzegovina. Obtain the permit in the US before departure and carry both documents.
For a licence issued elsewhere, use the issuing country’s advice and the hire company’s document requirements. The UK permit version is not a universal answer. An IDP accompanies the original licence; it cannot replace it.
Insurance evidence follows the registration plate
The Bosnia and Herzegovina Green Card Bureau recognises plates from Multilateral Agreement countries as international third-party motor-insurance evidence. Its list includes the UK, Croatia, Serbia, Montenegro and EU member states, with exceptions for certain vehicle types. This rule follows the car’s registration, not your nationality.
The Bureau’s Green Card list covers Albania, Azerbaijan, North Macedonia, Morocco, Moldova, Tunisia, Türkiye and Ukraine. Those vehicles need valid Green Card/IMIC evidence covering BiH. Arrange it with the insurer and carry a paper copy beside the registration. The published guidance differs on electronic acceptance, so do not rely on a phone-only document.
When frontier insurance is needed
Vehicles from outside the Green Card system, including US-registered cars, need frontier insurance covering the stay, according to the Bureau. It also applies when a vehicle lacks the international evidence required for its regime. Bringing a US-registered car is therefore a different case from using a US licence in a locally registered rental.
The Bureau describes purchase at a crossing through a BiH compulsory-motor insurer, with the premium determined by vehicle type and length of stay. FCDO names Bijača, Izačići and Kamensko among the purchase points. Establish the seller and arrangements before depending on arrival purchase; the publications do not give every seller’s hours.
Permission and protection are separate
For a rental crossing, have the permitted countries recorded in the agreement, with territorial insurance evidence, registration and the assistance contact. Ask separately about collision and theft protection, excess, deposits and recovery. Third-party motor insurance cannot answer those hire-contract questions.
Keep the original licence, required permit, identification, registration, insurance and any hire or owner permission together. During a roadside check, follow the officer’s instructions and provide the requested documents. If the papers cannot be obtained in time, compare arranged transport or public transport for that part of the journey.
Before collecting a car
Give the rental company the licence’s issuing country, driver details and intended route. Its reply should name the originals required at collection and the driver-age and licence-holding conditions. Include an additional driver or a return in another town in the quote.
Include those questions, the dates and collection point in a car-hire request, then compare the rental provider’s terms. For arrival planning, see the airport-transfer guide; for private road journeys, prepare a transfer request. Check the specific operator’s journey and terms before arranging the rest of the day.
The road-rules guide and winter-driving guide cover the vehicle and seasonal preparation beyond the documents. For an onward border crossing, use the border overview to bring the passengers and vehicle together.
