Accessibility contacts and assistance requests

Tell the airline, hotel, driver or venue what help you need with distance, steps, boarding or communication. Before visiting the War Childhood Museum in Sarajevo, ask how to enter while its lift is out of service.

Sarajevo Airport: arrange flight assistance through the airline

Request assistance through your airline or travel agent at least 48 hours before the published departure, as Sarajevo Airport asks. Give the flight and date, then explain the help needed with distance, aircraft steps or transfer to the seat. Its assistance guidance places the start of arranged departure assistance at the call point or check-in desk.

General airport information is on +387 33 289 100 or infodesk@sarajevo-airport.ba; that desk does not replace the airline request. Keep the assistance reply with the flight details. The airport accessibility portal organises information around the stages of the visit.

War Childhood Museum: ask about the entrance before travelling

The War Childhood Museum is at Logavina 32. Its visitor page reports that the lift is out of service. It also describes two entrance steps, a wheelchair-accessible exhibition and toilet, and seating. Ask how you can enter during the outage: visit@warchildhood.org or +387 33 53 55 58.

Call in advance if you need mobility assistance and wish to reserve parking. The museum offers Bosnian sign-language tours for groups of at least six with at least five days’ notice; its published Braille stories are in Bosnian too. Name the language and format you need in the request.

Make the request specific

For a museum enquiry, include the date, expected arrival, mobility aid and barrier you need help with. For example: “Your page says the lift is out of service. Can I enter using [aid] on [date], and can you arrange parking?” The reply should address the entrance for your visit.

For a vehicle enquiry, explain how you board, whether the wheelchair must remain occupied, its dimensions, luggage and the pickup point. The accessibility planning guide helps you plan the room and outings around those needs.

Calling a published number

For ordinary full telephone numbers, use Bosnia and Herzegovina’s +387 country code and omit the domestic leading 0 when dialling internationally. The museum’s +387 (0)33 53 55 58 becomes +387 33 53 55 58. Short service codes work differently; do not create a full number by adding +387.

Wheelchairs, communication and the room

For a flight with a wheelchair, tell the airline whether it folds and, if powered, the battery type and whether it can be removed. Ask what dimensions and handling details it requires. Photograph the chair before handing it over and keep a reachable contact on the label.

Sarajevo Airport uses WCHR for assistance with distance when a passenger can manage stairs, WCHS when aircraft stairs are a barrier, and WCHC for assistance to the cabin seat. Describe what you can do as well as using a code, so the airline can record the appropriate request.

For a room, ask about a step-free entrance, lift dimensions, room floor, shower and grab rails. If hearing, vision or sensory support would help, request written updates, a staff meeting point, guiding assistance or a quieter place to wait. Agree the support with each provider before relying on it.

A message you can reuse

“Hello. I am travelling on [date], booking [reference]. I can manage [distance or steps] and need help from [meeting point] to [seat or entrance]. My mobility aid is [type and dimensions]. Please tell me what you can arrange, where to meet staff and whom to contact on the day. My number is [country code and number].”

For a tram, bus or train, give the line, service date, direction and stop. The Sarajevo tram, Banja Luka bus, Mostar bus, intercity and train-arrival guides help identify the operator. Ask about boarding at your stop on that service.

Record accommodation requirements in a stay outline and ask the property about the access features you need. Discuss care or equipment needs directly with the clinical provider, supplier or insurer. Confirm the actual arrangements before travelling.
