Winter driving and the mountain approach

For a winter journey, the car and the final mountain approach matter as much as the distance. Aim for a daylight arrival, leave room to shorten the day and know where you could stop if conditions change. A snow-free city is only the start of the route.

Winter equipment requirements

BIHAMK’s country guidance lists 1 November to 1 April as the winter-equipment period, regardless of weather. For a passenger car, it describes three alternatives: winter tyres on every wheel; winter tyres on the driven wheels with chains or other traction devices ready for at least two driven wheels; or summer tyres on every wheel with at least 4 mm tread and those traction devices.

For a hire, ask which tyres and compatible traction equipment would come with the actual car. “Winter package” is less useful than that answer. Any extra charge belongs in the quote before collection.

When collecting a hire car

At collection, ask the provider to show how the traction equipment fits the driven wheels and explain whom to call if the car becomes unusable. Practising with the provider is easier than trying unfamiliar chains beside a difficult mountain road.

Clear snow and ice that block your view or could fall from the car before moving. Keep an ice scraper, warm clothes, drinking water and a charged phone within reach. An offline map and a small torch are useful backup items for the journey.

Read the road report for the sections you will use

BIHAMK separates motorway, main-road and border information. A1 Sarajevo zapad–Lepenica and A1 Kakanj–Lašva identify particular stretches, rather than a whole city-to-city journey. Match the current report to your route before leaving and after a long stop.

For route information, BIHAMK publishes 1325 daily from 06:00 to 20:00. Name the final mountain destination as well as the main road when asking about the approach. A road report for the earlier part of the journey does not establish conditions at the hotel or house later that day.

A shorter day is a useful option

Aim to make the mountain approach in daylight and keep a lower-level stop or overnight alternative in mind. If snow or ice makes the journey unsafe, postpone it. On an icy stretch, slow down, leave a much larger gap and use gentle steering, acceleration and braking. Follow closures and official directions. An unsigned forest road is a poor substitute for the main route when snow changes the plan.

Keep to established roads and paved stopping places. FCDO identifies mines and unexploded weapons as risks on rural ground, road edges, in woods and at abandoned sites. Snow can hide the ground: do not improvise an off-road turnaround or a roadside walk into unfamiliar terrain.

Roadside assistance and emergency help

Save BIHAMK’s roadside-assistance number 1282 and +387 33 282 100 for calls from outside the country. Give the vehicle registration, travel direction and nearest exit or marked location. Your assistance cover and any charge belong to your actual hire, membership or insurance arrangement.

For an injured person needing an ambulance, FCDO publishes 124. Seek emergency help first and contact the hire provider or insurer when it is safe. A usable location is more helpful than the mountain’s name alone.

Use the required daytime lighting, and select the appropriate road lights for darkness or reduced visibility. The driving guide covers the wider route, and the road-rules guide covers the detailed lighting, speed and equipment rules. For an arranged winter journey, give the exact overnight address, equipment and arrival time so the proposal includes the final approach.

Fuel, city stops and an alternative to driving

Refuel before a remote mountain stretch and use established service stops. The fuel guide helps with that part of the day. A warm layer, gloves and drinking water are useful even when the city departure feels mild.

Include the specific tyres, equipment and destination in a car-hire request, then check each rental provider’s offer against those requirements. See the airport-transfer guide for airport-transfer planning, or prepare a transfer request for a private road journey. Agree the suitable vehicle and final approach directly with the operator.
