Arrive in Bosnia and Herzegovina

Whether you arrive by air, road, coach or train, plan the last leg to your first stay as well.

How will you arrive?

Fly in

Sarajevo, Tuzla, Banja Luka and Mostar airports serve different parts of the country. A lower flight fare can lose its advantage if it leaves you with a long journey to your first night’s accommodation.

Drive in

A regional road trip gives you room for stops, but the crossing, traveller documents and vehicle permission all belong in the plan.

At a glance

The airport or station name is a starting point, not the address of your stay.

For a late arrival, settle transport and accommodation key handover together.

For separate tickets, leave room for delay and the journey between terminals.

Entry requirements concern the traveller; hire-car permission and vehicle insurance are separate.

Into the city options

Public transport

Use the airport or station’s published service, then account for the walk or connection to your accommodation.

Car hire

Useful when the trip continues beyond the city. Match collection, return and parking to the days you need the vehicle.

Flying: the journey to your first night

For a Sarajevo stay, the airport’s Airport–Baščaršija bus is a useful public-transport starting point. Baščaršija is the city endpoint, so the remaining walk or connection belongs in the plan. The Sarajevo arrival guide helps connect that choice to the address where you are staying.

The other airports have different approaches: Tuzla Airport is in Gornje Dubrave, Živinice; Banja Luka Airport gives its address in Laktaši; Mostar Airport is at Ortiješ bb. Compare their published onward options in the four-airport guide.

A working phone helps with the last leg. Sarajevo Airport lists a BH Telecom sales point on the ground floor of Terminal B. For a late arrival, an offline address and transport contact are still useful: the sales point’s hours need not match your flight.

Coach and train: the station matters

Sarajevo’s main coach station is at Put života 8, near the railway station. That is a different arrival from the airport or Baščaršija. Read the terminal on the actual ticket and work out the journey from there to your stay; the coach-arrival guide covers the next decisions.

For rail, ŽFBiH’s timetable includes Sarajevo, Konjic, Mostar and Čapljina station choices. The rail-arrival guide is the place to compare them. Check that the service runs on your travel date, especially if you’re considering a seasonal coastal train.

By road: one journey, two sets of documents

Use the guide for the country you are driving from: Croatia, Serbia or Montenegro. The border overview explains crossing selection and vehicle insurance; entry rules cover the traveller. Permission for the passengers and permission for a hire car to cross are separate matters.

Essentials

Save the accommodation address, arrival contact and key instructions offline.

Discuss assistance for the whole journey with the relevant airline or operator, including boarding and the final entrance.

A working phone and small cash notes are useful for the last leg.
