Croatia to Bosnia and Herzegovina by road
For Mostar, Banja Luka, Bihać or Trebinje, the useful Croatian crossing is different. Start with your first stop in Bosnia and Herzegovina. A return to Croatia also brings Schengen entry and stay rules into the plan.

Herzegovina, Trebinje, Neum or the north-west?
Croatia’s regional police directory lists Nova Sela–Bijača and Gornji Brgat–Ivanica for international passengers and goods, and Metković–Doljani for international passengers. Compare Bijača or Doljani for Herzegovina, and Ivanica for Dubrovnik–Trebinje. It also lists Mali Prolog–Crveni Grm for international passengers, another corridor for the Čapljina and Ljubuški area.
For Neum, the directory lists Klek–Neum I and Zaton Doli–Neum II. For Bihać and the Una valley, compare Izačić–Ličko Petrovo Selo on the official map. Its May 2023 date makes it a guide to the names and geography, with current restrictions needed for access.
Banja Luka, Tuzla and Posavina
For the Banja Luka corridor, distinguish the two Gradiška crossings. HAK’s report dated 13 October 2026 says the old Stara Gradiška–Gradiška bridge is closed in both directions because of damage, while Gornji Varoš–Gradiška is open. Use the actual crossing name when agreeing a route; the older Stara Gradiška approach is not interchangeable with it.
For Tuzla and Posavina, compare the Županja–Orašje corridor with your destination. HAK’s report also carries restrictions at nearby crossings. Read those before accepting a diversion, particularly for a bus, van or vehicle whose category differs from an ordinary car.
BiH entry and Croatian return entry
Bosnia and Herzegovina is outside Schengen. Its passport conditions include issue within the preceding ten years, or permanent validity, and at least three months after intended departure. Identity-card entry applies only to specified nationalities, including EU citizens. The BiH entry guide sets out the document and visa questions for your party.
For a return to Croatia, its Ministry of Interior guidance gives third-country short stays as 90 days in any 180 days across Schengen. The passport must meet its ten-year issue and three-month post-departure criteria; a visa where required, purpose, means and onward eligibility also matter. Days in BiH do not reset that rolling Schengen allowance.
EES: prepare for the Croatian border procedure
The European Commission says the Entry/Exit System (EES) became fully operational on 10 April 2026, replacing passport stamping for travellers within its scope. Croatia’s EES guidance covers certain third-country short-stay travellers and exemptions, including EU citizens and specified residence, long-stay and local-border categories.
Croatia describes facial imaging and fingerprint checks. Children under 12 are exempt from fingerprints; biometric collection has no fee. Have each traveller’s document accessible and follow the marked lane and officer’s instructions. The process belongs in the timing of a return flight or coach connection.
Vehicle documents and insurance
Carry your driving licence, vehicle registration and the insurance documents required for that car. For a Croatian-registered vehicle, the BiH Green Card Bureau recognises the plate as motor-liability evidence under the Multilateral Agreement, subject to its exceptions. A vehicle registered elsewhere may need different evidence. If frontier insurance is required, UK government advice lists Bijača, Crveni Grm, Izačići, Kamensko and Šamac among the purchase points. Identify the seller and check opening hours before relying on arrival purchase. The driving-document guide explains the categories. Rental-company permission and recovery cover must still be agreed separately.
Read BIHAMK’s dated road report for the BiH approach, or seek route information on 1325 daily 06:00–20:00. Temporary access to a local crossing needs a decision covering your date. The border overview brings the papers together; a private-transport request can describe a cross-border journey with planned stops.
Across the border with a stop on the way
For a Split or Dubrovnik journey through Visit BiH transfer planning, give the first BiH stop as well as the final destination, with the date, party and luggage. Put the route, stops and terms into the enquiry, including any separately booked connection.
For a rental starting in BiH, set out collection and return arrangements in a car-hire request. Include the trip to the collection point in the cost. Record your first-night requirements in a stay outline, then agree the arrival window and late-entry arrangements with the property.
