Packing for cities, rivers and mountains

Pack comfortable shoes and layers, then add what you need for the season and your activities. A warm Mostar afternoon and a cool mountain day can belong to the same trip.

Keep these within reach

  • Passport and the entry documents you need.
  • Accommodation address, check-in details and any pickup instructions saved offline.
  • Phone, charging cable and a way to pay.
  • Regular medicines and the personal items you need on arrival.

Keep medicines in pharmacy packaging with your prescription and any required paperwork. Check destination and transit rules before travel; the medicines guide covers preparation.

Clothes and layers

  • Comfortable shoes with grip for stone streets and uneven paths.
  • Light clothes, a hat and sun protection for hot days.
  • An extra layer and rain protection for higher ground.

Check the forecast for each place, especially before a mountain outing.

Cooler months

  • Spring and autumn: a waterproof layer and warmer clothes.
  • Winter city visits: a warm coat, hat, gloves and suitable footwear.
  • Winter mountain days: protective outerwear and the equipment your activity requires.

A useful day bag

  • Refillable water bottle and a snack.
  • Phone power and an offline map.
  • Sun protection or an extra layer for the day’s forecast.
  • Basic first-aid supplies, a torch or repellent when your outdoor route calls for them.

Add the kit for your plans

  • Rafting or skiing: use the organiser’s equipment list and check what is supplied.
  • Pools and permitted water activities: swimwear, towel and suitable footwear. A river or waterfall visit does not itself mean swimming is allowed.
  • Mosques and monasteries: a scarf or cover-up and clothes that meet the site’s instructions.

Choose luggage you can carry

Allow for station steps, cobbled streets and the walk to your room. Check access with your accommodation if stairs or luggage handling matter.

For a transfer, give the passenger count and number and size of bags, including sports equipment.

Before you close the bag

Check the latest forecast and your activity’s instructions. Match your chargers and adaptor with the plug guide, and keep the first day’s essentials accessible.
