Seven days through Sarajevo, Travnik, Jajce and Mostar

This first-visit route pairs Sarajevo and Mostar with a night each in Travnik and Jajce. It suits travellers who enjoy changing bases and want smaller towns alongside the two cities. Six nights cover the route; the seventh day is for departure.

Six nights in four bases: two in Sarajevo, one in Travnik, one in Jajce and two in Mostar. Day seven is for departure.

How this route works

The overnight pattern is two Sarajevo nights, one Travnik night, one Jajce night and two Mostar nights. This outline assumes self-drive or arranged transport between the towns. It puts Sarajevo–Travnik on day three, Travnik–Jajce on day four and Jajce–Mostar on day five, so you travel with your luggage between overnight bases.

Keep the Jajce–Mostar day centred on the journey and arrival, rather than adding a timed museum visit. With a driver, those three legs belong in the transport proposal; with a hire car, hotel parking and the final return location affect the plan. The car-rental guide covers that separate decision.

For public transport, check a departure for each leg before choosing your overnight stops. If that creates awkward connections, the two-city outline is a simpler starting point. A Sarajevo departure adds a return journey on day seven; an early flight means moving the last night there or extending the trip.

Days one and two: Sarajevo

If you arrive before dark, start at Sebilj in Baščaršija and explore Kazandžiluk’s copper-working shops. Bravadžiluk makes a natural food stop before the walk past Vijećnica, Sarajevo’s City Hall, and along the Miljacka to Latin Bridge. For a late arrival, eat near your stay and move this walk to day two, with time for the museum. Overnight: Sarajevo.

Give day two a different focus at the War Childhood Museum, Logavina 32, where personal objects and accounts tell stories of childhood affected by war. Leave an unhurried afternoon afterwards. Overnight: Sarajevo.

The museum currently reports that its accessibility lift is out of service. If step-free entry matters, contact the museum about the entrance before making the visit part of your day.

Day three: Travnik

Travel to Travnik and make Stari Grad fortress, above the town at Varoš bb, the main visit. Its elevated setting gives the town a different perspective from Sarajevo’s river streets. Keep the rest of the afternoon for the centre and Plava Voda; adding a Vlašić outing would make this a much fuller day. Overnight: Travnik.

The municipality publishes different opening patterns for April–September and October–March, with working-day hours in the colder months. Match the fortress visit to your arrival day; Plava Voda is an alternative focus if the fortress is closed.

Day four: Jajce

Continue to Jajce for the Pliva waterfall in the town centre and the old-town streets. The fortress above the town adds a view across the city if the visit fits your afternoon. Overnight: Jajce.

For one further outing, choose between the II AVNOJ Session Museum and the Pliva watermills. The museum occupies the building where the assembly met on 29–30 November 1943; its exhibits include original furniture and Tito’s chair. The watermills make a separate river-landscape outing from the central waterfall. Pick the visit that suits your interests and arrival time.

Days five and six: Mostar

Day five is the journey from Jajce to Mostar. If you arrive before dark, wander Kujundžiluk and the Old Bridge quarter once settled. Keep ticketed visits for the next day. Overnight: Mostar.

On day six, explore the Jusovina side and the Crooked Bridge, then visit Muslibegović House at Osmana Đikića 41. Its Ottoman-period interiors include Bosnian handwork and Anatolian kilims, bringing domestic life into a day otherwise spent among streets and river views. Check visiting arrangements with the house. Overnight: Mostar.

Day seven: the onward journey

Leave this day for departure, including the return to Sarajevo if that is where your flight leaves. It is a travel day, so a full Sarajevo sightseeing programme belongs elsewhere in the plan.

Plan the route with the transport, stays and selected visits side by side. Keep existing bookings with the outline and decide whether you want the four-town route or a slower version.
