Serbia to Bosnia and Herzegovina by road

Rača serves the Bijeljina side, Karakaj the Zvornik area, and Vardište–Kotroman the Višegrad approach. Use the crossing’s full name when planning a journey from Serbia: “the bridge at Zvornik” leaves too much room for confusion.

A crossing name is more useful than “the bridge”

The official map pairs Rača with Sremska Rača, Karakaj with Mali Zvornik’s new bridge, Šepak with Trbušnica, and Vardište with Kotroman. Compare Rača for Bijeljina, Karakaj for the Zvornik area, and Vardište–Kotroman for the Višegrad side. The map is marked May 2023; use these pairings for orientation alongside current restrictions.

Serbian Customs’ published hours document lists Sremska Rača, Badovinci, Trbušnica, Mali Zvornik, Ljubovija, Bajina Bašta, Kotroman and Uvac at 00:00–24:00 in the BiH road-crossing section. It separately gives Trbušnica’s freight customs work as 08:00–20:00 Monday–Saturday. Customs hours cannot override a police restriction, bridge closure or freight prohibition.

At Zvornik, distinguish the old and new bridges

BIHAMK’s 13 October 2026 report listed Karakaj open to all vehicle categories and Šepak closed to freight. Karakaj uses the new bridge; the old Zvornik–Mali Zvornik bridge is a different route. Give a driver the exact crossing and use the latest road report for the departure.

BIHAMK publishes route information on 1325 daily 06:00–20:00. Give the crossing and vehicle category when asking about the approach. Allow time for the drive beyond the crossing as well as any separately booked onward connection. Allow for queues at the crossing.

Entry into BiH and a return to Serbia

BiH’s Ministry of Security specifies a qualifying travel document issued within ten years, or with permanent validity, and at least three months after intended departure. Serbian and EU citizens are among the valid-ID groups. For the other document and visa branches, use the BiH entry guide and Foreign Ministry’s nationality information.

For a return to Serbia, use its Foreign Ministry’s visa-regime directory and entry requirements. It describes a valid travel document, or an identity card where an agreement or decision permits it, and a visa if required. Sufficient means are given as €50 per day, evidenced by cash or a bank statement. Booking, invitation, onward-travel and insurance evidence may also be requested.

The vehicle documents travel with the passengers

For Serbian-registered vehicles, the BiH Green Card Bureau recognises the plate as international motor-liability evidence under the Multilateral Agreement, subject to vehicle-type exceptions. The border overview separates vehicle registration from driver nationality. This BiH-entry rule does not settle every insurance requirement on a longer route.

For a hired or borrowed car, agree the permitted countries, owner’s documents and assistance cover before departure. Keep the licence, registration and insurance details with the passengers’ papers. On a coach journey, use the ticket’s named terminal in the coach-arrival guide when arranging the final leg to the room.

The first stop beyond the crossing

For a Višegrad visit, leave room in the first day to reach the town and settle in. For a Bijeljina- or Zvornik-side arrival, compare the full route to the first night. A crossing with longer published hours can still be a poor fit for the itinerary.

When seeking arranged transport, give the Serbian departure point, BiH destination, date, stops and party size. Ask for the actual route and terms. Travellers’ admission and the vehicle’s border arrangements still need their own answers.
