Montenegro to Bosnia and Herzegovina by road

Trebinje, Bileća, Foča and Čajniče sit on different routes from Montenegro. Match the crossing to the places you want to see and the first night. On a coast-to-Sarajevo trip, the stops can matter as much as the distance.

Choose a crossing for the journey

The four crossing pairs linked from Montenegro’s official entry portal are Zupci–Sitnica, Klobuk–Ilino Brdo, Deleuša–Vraćenovići and Hum–Šćepan Polje. Use both names when discussing a route or meeting point. The portal links cameras for the Montenegro side; a camera listing does not establish the access conditions for your vehicle.

For Herceg Novi and Trebinje, compare Zupci–Sitnica. Klobuk–Ilino Brdo serves the Trebinje and Nikšić direction; Deleuša–Vraćenovići is the Bileća approach. Hum–Šćepan Polje belongs in a Foča and Piva-area itinerary. Check current queues before choosing a crossing.

A coast-to-Sarajevo journey can include a night in Trebinje or a longer Herzegovina stay. Put those stops into the route before comparing a mountain approach. The distance alone says little about how well the drive fits the holiday.

Plan each country’s entry separately

A return flight from Montenegro makes re-entry part of the trip even after a short visit to BiH. Use the BiH entry guide and Montenegro’s nationality-specific visa information for each traveller. A visa, residence permit and identity card have different roles; the responsible authority must establish which rule applies.

Resolve outward and return entry before paying for a fixed itinerary. If one passenger has a different nationality or travel document, put that case to the authority separately; the rest of the party’s answer may not apply.

A road trip or an arranged journey

For a hired or borrowed car, agree the owner’s cross-border permission, required documents and assistance cover. Montenegro-registered vehicles fall within the BiH Green Card Bureau’s plate-evidence regime, subject to its vehicle-type exceptions; the driving-document guide explains the distinction. The driving guide covers the wider journey.

Montenegro’s entry portal lists border information on +382 20 224 491. Give the crossing, date and vehicle type when asking about restrictions. For a group or flight connection, compare the coach and transfer options with the approach and onward journey, including a delayed crossing.

Metaljka and the mountain approaches

For the Čajniče–Pljevlja corridor, Metaljka is another crossing name to discuss with the border information service. Montenegro’s archived crossing list names Metaljka on both sides. That list is useful for orientation; it does not establish present opening hours or vehicle access.

Before a Foča-side or other mountain drive, read BIHAMK’s road report for the approach as well as the queue. For winter travel, use the winter-driving guide. A closer overnight stop or a daylight departure can make a demanding first day easier.

A journey with a driver, or a local rental

For a Trebinje–coast or Foča–Plužine enquiry through Visit BiH transfer planning, state the date, start and finish, passengers, luggage and stops. Ask which journey can actually be supplied, with its terms and border arrangements.

If considering a car collected inside BiH, include the journey to collection and any later return to Montenegro in your car-hire request. Record your first-night requirements in a stay outline, then agree the arrival window and room access with the property.
