Road rules before driving

Drive on the right and follow the control at the junction. Before leaving with a hire car, find its lighting controls, fit the restraints and set the route. The published passenger-car limits below are general categories; the sign and conditions in front of you still govern the drive.

Right-hand traffic and the junction in front of you

Drive on the right. The published Bosnian road-law texts put police directions ahead of lights or signs, lights ahead of other signs, and signs ahead of the general rule. Temporary control at works can change the movement through a familiar junction.

Select the lane and indicate before the manoeuvre. If navigation points towards an unsuitable entrance, continue safely and revise the route at a stopping place. A spoken direction from the phone does not give priority.

The published general passenger-car limits

France’s travel advice gives the general passenger-car limits as 50 km/h in built-up areas, 80 km/h on other roads outside them, 100 km/h on expressways and 130 km/h on motorways. The Bosnian texts define the 100 km/h category as expressways and roads reserved for motor vehicles.

A lower posted limit takes priority. Visibility, traffic and the road surface may require less speed than that limit allows. Towing and rules for particular vehicles or drivers need their own answer; these figures are the general ordinary-car categories.

Know which lights are on

The published rules specify dipped headlights or daytime running lights during daylight. At night or in reduced visibility, select the appropriate road lights. Daytime running lights alone are not the night-driving setting.

Find the lighting control before leaving collection. Ask the provider to show you how to select dipped headlights and what the automatic setting does, so a tunnel or poor visibility does not leave you searching the dashboard.

Seats before suitcases

The published rules require seat belts for the driver and passengers. Give everyone a suitable seat before fitting bags around the party; luggage space cannot double as a passenger position.

For a family hire, send each child’s age and size when requesting the restraint and inspect the fit at collection. A belt is not a substitute for an appropriate child seat. This is practical fitting preparation; the complete legal age, front-seat and airbag exceptions need separate confirmation.

Keep phone tasks for a safe stop

The published rules prohibit handheld phone use while driving and require hands-free equipment for communication, including stops at lights or for priority in the traffic stream. Audio or video must not mask road signals or distract the driver.

Set the destination while parked. A passenger can manage a changed route; otherwise stop somewhere suitable before using the phone. For a wine-tasting day, arrange a non-drinking driver or transport for the visits and return.

Before a longer drive

Keep the licence and vehicle documents with the hire or owner permission. Ask the provider to show the equipment supplied with the car and how to use it. The winter-driving guide covers seasonal equipment and approach-road planning.

Use BIHAMK’s road report for the chosen route before leaving. Use a suitable parking place when revising navigation. For a breakdown or incident, keep the hire company’s contact beside the published emergency and roadside contacts.
