Land borders: plan the crossing and the journey

A border crossing should fit the first place you want to visit, the vehicle and every passenger’s documents. Use the country guides below to compare routes into Herzegovina, the north-west and the Drina valley, then plan the journey beyond the booth.

Use a crossing that serves your journey

The Ministry of Security’s entry guidance requires an international crossing used within its working hours. Compare the Croatia, Serbia and Montenegro approaches with your first overnight stop. A small local post shown by sat-nav may have access conditions that exclude an ordinary visitor.

A temporary opening belongs to its stated dates. Border Police’s May 2026 notice gave some local crossings access from 1 June to 1 October, and others a three-month period or a later-decision condition. That earlier notice cannot establish access for a later journey.

Use the Border Police crossing map for names and orientation. Its image is marked May 2023 despite the newer hosting page. Current restrictions, rather than the map’s age or a routing app, determine whether the crossing suits your vehicle.

The traveller: document and visa

For a passport journey, Ministry of Security guidance specifies issue within the preceding ten years, or permanent validity, and at least three months remaining after the intended departure from Bosnia and Herzegovina. Its identity-card provisions cover specified nationalities, including EU, Serbian and Montenegrin citizens. A residence card or driving licence does not automatically serve as a travel document.

Use the Foreign Ministry’s visa information for your nationality. Admission to a neighbouring country does not settle entry into BiH. The Ministry describes a border visa as exceptional, requiring evidence of an unforeseeable imperative reason. Arrange an ordinary holiday around the applicable advance process; the entry guide covers the wider conditions and differing official registration summaries.

The vehicle: registration and permission

For a car registered in Croatia, Serbia or Montenegro, the BiH Green Card Bureau recognises the registration plate as international motor-liability evidence under the Multilateral Agreement, subject to its vehicle-type exceptions. The rule follows the registration, not the driver’s nationality. It does not establish comprehensive cover.

With a hire car, ask for the permitted countries, cross-border charges, documents and assistance arrangements in the agreement. Europcar’s terms, for example, describe a fee that varies during the year; another company may have different terms. Keep the licence, registration and insurance details beside the passengers’ documents. The driving-document guide separates the licence, permit and insurance questions.

The crossing on the day

BIHAMK’s road report is dated and timed. Read the approach-road restrictions as well as the border section. For Croatia, use HAK’s report alongside it. A short reported queue cannot predict your arrival; an alternative crossing must still serve your vehicle and route.

BIHAMK publishes route information on 1325 daily 06:00–20:00; Border Police lists its operational centre on +387 33 755 300. Give the crossing, vehicle category and first-night destination when seeking information. Avoid making a separate flight, coach or key collection depend on an uninterrupted crossing.

Which approach fits the trip?

For a Dalmatian coast and Herzegovina trip, compare the Croatia guide’s Mostar and Trebinje approaches. For Una National Park and Bihać, look at the north-western route. Serbia’s Rača and Vardište approaches serve quite different first stops, while Montenegro offers Trebinje, Bileća and Foča-side arrivals.

For a mountain journey in winter, use the winter-driving guide, especially if the first night is far beyond the border. On a coach arrival, the named terminal in the coach guide determines the final leg. Save the crossing and first-night address offline through the mapping guide; set the phone up at a safe stopping place.

A car, a driver and the first night

For a cross-border enquiry through Visit BiH transfer planning, give the start and finish, date, stops, passengers and luggage. The reply should identify the journey the provider can supply and what the quote includes. A border delay still belongs in the onward plan.

For a rental starting inside BiH, prepare a car-hire request with the collection point, return location and any later border crossing. Record the expected arrival window in your stay outline, then agree late access directly with the property. None of these choices settles the travellers’ entry requirements.
