Plan my trip

Choose your city base

Begin with the day you want: Sarajevo’s streets and museums, Mostar’s bridge quarter, art in Banja Luka or Tuzla, or the Una in Bihać. Trebinje gives the southern part of the country its own city stay. An overnight base makes room for an evening and a second subject the next morning.

Sarajevo and Mostar

In Sarajevo, Baščaršija’s food and copper-working streets lead towards City Hall and Latin Bridge. A museum gives the walk a particular subject; a second day can take up another part of the city’s story. A Sarajevo base suits that return to the streets and museums.

Mostar concentrates a first visit around Stari Most, the old lanes and a historic house or mosque. A night in Mostar gives the old quarter an evening as well as a sightseeing visit. Its surroundings can then have a separate day.

Banja Luka and Tuzla

Banja Luka brings Kastel and Gospodska Street together with contemporary art. The Museum of Contemporary Art of Republika Srpska is the main indoor choice here; its current exhibition can shape the visit. For an art-focused stay, compare central areas in the Banja Luka stay guide.

In Tuzla, the central squares lead into the city’s salt story. The International Portrait Gallery adds a different subject, with a local connection to Ismet Mujezinović. Remembrance visits need space of their own. Staying in Tuzla gives those subjects separate parts of the visit. For a different summer focus, consider a day at Panonika’s salt lakes, with the season and visitor arrangements checked for your dates.

Bihać and Trebinje

Bihać makes the Una part of a city day, with the wider national park as a separate outing. A Bihać base is useful when the river landscape is the reason for the trip. A city-centre walk and a park waterfall visit have different starting points.

Trebinje has its own Old Town, Trebišnjica river and Museum of Herzegovina. Give those a city day before adding a cellar or monastery. The Trebinje stay guide helps place the room for that evening; this is a distinct southern base.

A short stop or an overnight base

For a short stop, one walk and one main interior visit leave room for the onward journey. An overnight stay is more useful when you want an evening in the city or a second day with a different subject. The stay-area guides compare the actual location of a room, beyond the city name.

When combining Sarajevo and Mostar, fit the journey between them around the time you want in each city. A second museum morning and a move to the next base compete for the same part of the day.

Use weather and seasons to weigh the time of year, and city transport for the journeys around your chosen base. If steps or an entrance affect your plans, check the particular venue before fixing the day.
